Ella got a camera!

Since I got my own camera for Christmas (thanks Grandpadaddy, GrandMary and Cousin Reid!), I wanted to start putting pictures on the hank-n-ella blog myself. Let me know what you think!

Here I am skating with my new American Girl doll. See: she has her ice skates on too!

The cool Zamboni tractor at the skating rink downtown.

My new camera has funny backgrounds. Hank and Malachi are headed to the moon!

The house made of straw

Ella had a great fieldtrip this week, so I went along as well. We visited a home being built nearby that is being insulted with straw. Did you know that rice straw is best for using in strawbale houses becaause it has a high cellulose content? In fact rice straw has more cellulose than wood. This property makes it the most fireproof of the straws.

The local paper was there and Julie French wrote a cute little piece about it (Click here to read the article - Ella made the front page!). Ella got to help stuff straw into crevices and open spaces. It will be covered with chicken wire next and then covered with plaster. Straw bales will give the wall a 44 R-value, which is pretty nice. It is usually not used to insulate floors because you cannot control for moisture as well and it is also more of a fire hazard under the house (that was my question).

I think just about everyone has had an experience with straw or hay and can relate to this picture. It's dusty stuff!

Christmas 2008, Part II

Dad reads to Hank.
The kids are enjoying their new 'kid's table,' locally made with awesome materials by Eric Strong. Thanks Nana!

GrandMary (that's what we still call her) gives Ella her first sewing lesson on Ella's new sewing machine.

Christmas 2008

Our Christmas tree - in the forest!
The neighborhood deer family happened by on Christmas Eve. Notice our bird feeder cone hanging from the tree? We put peanut butter and bird seed on a bunch of them and hung them around.

Nothin' beats bonding with the kids like making Christmas cookies!

Back again

Here is hank w/ his new haircut.
Building a pile of leaves at the bottom of a slide can provide hours of entertainment!

Our little guy is really becoming a big guy. He speaks in full sentences and uses this new skill to command the household!

Kathryn and Jani

This is Kathryn with her new boss and business partner, Dr. Jani Rollins. Jani has asked Kathryn to join her practice starting at the first of the year. Jani specializes in family practice, as does Kathryn, so it should be a perfect fit. We are so proud of Kathryn for getting such a great new job! (also, her husband Thomas is a mtn. biker and snowboarder and her kids are similar-aged as ours!)

Gold Beach

We went to Gold Beach for a quick weekend getaway recently. We had a great time, of course, despite having to bundle up quite a bit.

Ella Reads "Go Dog Go!"

While both of the kids have really taken to school this fall, it is Ella who has really started to soar. Here she is, reading Go Dog Go! to us!

This is such a classic shot. Hank is sporting a fashion-conscious Sesame Street bandaid above his eyebrow to match his sister's green glitter eye makeup. Ha!
